PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a government initiative aimed at providing free electricity to households in India through the installation of rooftop solar plants. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, the scheme targets the installation of rooftop solar plants in one crore households, with a total budget of Rs. 75,021 crores. Under this scheme, households receive a Central Finance Assistance (CFA) subsidy covering approximately 40% of the cost of installing a solar rooftop system.

Benefits:

According to the subsidy scheme, residential consumers can avail the following subsidy amounts based on the capacity of the solar rooftop system they opt for:

  • Rs. 30,000/- per kW up to 2 kW
  • Rs. 18,000/- per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW
  • Total Subsidy for systems larger than 3 kW capped at Rs 78,000

Summarizing these in comparison with suitable system size basis avg monthly consumption below

Solar rooftop system capacity Suitable for avg monthly consumption Eligible Subsidy amount
1KW 0 - 150 units Rs.30,000
2KW 150 - 250 units Rs.60,000
3KW and above 300 + units Rs.78,000

For Group Housing Society (GHS)/Resident Welfare Association (RWA), the subsidy is Rs. 18,000 per kW for common facilities, capped at 500 kW. The total capacity eligible for subsidy is calculated at 3 kW per house/flat.

For eg- if a GHS has only 50 flats, the max capacity which they can avail subsidy for is 50 X 3= 150KW
